Utah Investigative Journalism Project Claims Special Prize in State Contest

The Utah Investigative Journalism Project took home top honors in the Utah Headliners Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists statewide competition.

We won the special Roy B. Gibson Freedom of Information Award for our report on a previously undisclosed $350,000 loan and plane tickets given to Greg Hughes by influential developer Terry Diehl even as Hughes was playing a pivotal role ushering through deals benefiting Diehl’s developments. The story was the result of a series of records battles dating back to 2017.

UIJP director Eric Peterson also took Third Place in the “Best Newspaper Reporter” category. UIJP writer Taylor Hartman took home third place in Division A’s “Criminal Justice Reporting” category for his work on Utah’s rehab deserts looking at rural areas of the state with high drug abuse problems and scant drug treatment options available.

Leia Larsen received an Honorable Mention for the work she did on the dangers posed by a hazardous waste stockpile inside an old building purchased by Ogden City.
